That does not mean all designer T-shirts are bad, just that most of where your money is going is for the brand 🙂 It is very hard to hit a home run design the first time up since artists and buyers of art often differ in what works. Designs are a distillation of input from the company, owners, your art skills, and most importantly the desired customer perception, which is a moving target quite often. To eliminate revisions that you may not get paid for, and to nail it the first time requires several levels of art. First: Research. Visit company, see what they do, how they do it, the product, the service, know your client. Know the owner’s taste, look at his company, his branding. Is it a family owned company? Corporation? retail, wholesale, service? This helps narrow down the next section to be relevant. If the guy likes sports he will lean towards graphic logos based on lettering and simple structure of identifying symbols. If they have a specific product, look at it’s usage and what those customer’s identify with. Second: Thumbnails – simple 3×3″ pencil thumbnails, 3–5 of them. If they don’t like any, it is far easier to revise a thumbnail than a finished piece. When you arrive at one, do an enlarged mock up, rough outlines, color.
