I therefore expect it will still be some tens of year before this changes. And I am completely sure it will not come through fashion. They have tried, several times, but they only focus on appearance and not on functionality and how it feels, therefore they will never influence more than a few men to wear skirts. I also have to admit: In my mind is a skirt a very nice feminine signal. I really like to see a woman (or a girl) in a dress or a skirt, it is a “visual hug” to me. A man should bring flowers to a woman. The other way around: Wear a nice skirt. When I started to wear skirts, I was a bit afraid that this very nice feeling of seeing a woman in a skirt should disappear. It did not. This may also be the real reason why we still consider a skirt as something feminine. Skirts definitely looks better on women than on men, especially in the eyes of a man. Because we see it as a signal on femininity, and we like that signal.
But there are other ways of telling that they are women? Yes, but by wearing skirts you give up the functionality of pants. You at least appear to sacrifice something by wearing a skirt: Comfort, functionality, freedom of movement…. That’s why a skirt is such a strong signal. And by choosing the right skirt you can make it visible from a very long distance that you are a woman. Both men and women are therefore protecting this by a) making it solely a garment for women, and b) always focusing on negative aspects of wearing skirts versus pants. I noticed that when I started to wear skirts in the mountains. It was “WOW!!! Why has no one told me?” A woman I know was even more surprised when I told her of my experience, she said she had told me several times that skirts were comfortable. But I had never really believed her, I took it more as “it is a sacrifice, but not really that troublesome”. I guess more than a hundred thousands have seen me wearing skirts/dresses, including some thousand students. Almost every feedback I get is positive, and I guess I have reminded some women about how good it feels to wear a skirt or a dress. But I still haven’t seen any other man in skirts, except for a few kilts and once done as a gag.
The problem is not to understand why it started up that way, but why we continue to see it that way and why this view is so strong. The reason why women earlier always wore dresses is straightforward: Clothes were expensive, and most people could only afford one outfit to wear. As most women were pregnant a large part of their life, their only functional option was a dress. Men did work where a dress was not always suitable. Add a touch of religion, and we got dresses for women and pants for men. But why do we continue to see it the same way today? I am very interested in this question, because I started to wear skirts and dresses (I now almost never wear pants) some years ago. Because they were so comfortable and the best protection against any kind of weather in the mountains. (!) The only reason I can see is that both men and women want it this way. Wearing a skirt is a way of yelling out: I AM A WOMAN! Women love to have this way of giving such a statement, and men love that women have this opportunity.
