you don’t want to “cut” your shirts; you want to modify how you are putting them on. You do want your sling on outside of your clothes so you can use the operated sides hand. If they are giving you exercises to do, you want to be able to come out of the sling to do them, without having to get undressed each time. Jersey and interlock knitted fabrics are knitted on a circular knitting machine in continuous rolls. That roll roll is now dyed, washed and re-rolled. This is where the problem starts. Many times if the factory doesn’t trim off the starting edge, the grain is off when using a body size fabric layer. I have seen cheap t-shirt and expensive t-shirts do this and many times from offshore contractors, they don’t seem to care because the manufacturer squeeze them on the price. Meanwhile I see Gildan t-shirts made in Honduras look perfect every time you wash it. It really comes down to the manufacturer if they understand fabric and want quality or not. Also t-shirts are never starched after sewing. After sewing, they are garment washed and pressed on a flat vacuum table or put onto a frame on a carousel to be steamed for large production.
You have guessed correctly. The production of knitted T-shirts is primarily done on Circular Knitting Machines which is why there is no side seam. The knitted raw material is as you have assumed made in a tubular production. There’s no one way to wear a drop shoulder shirt – it all depends on your personal style. I tend to wear mine with skinny jeans or leggings, and either sneakers or heels. I also like to layer mine under jackets or cardigans for a more put-together look. Stitch another seam, about 3/8″ wide. The raw edges are now fully enclosed, inside the second seam and the first one, and the seam itself is narrower than usual. The first line of stitching will be showing at the outside edge. If you don’t have a sewing machine that has differential feed ? Then you’re going to have to stretch you fabric slightly as your stitching it, and pin carefully. Sometimes, you’ll have to do four or five stitches …stop the machine for a moment …lift up the presser foot to release the drag, and set it down again and continue stitching.
If the sleeve has been previously shortened there will be more allowance. But the problem is that many ready-to-wear shirts have little extra to do much more than 1/2 inch and that is pushing it. Think about what you want to do. You want to unfold the double cuff, cut it down to a single cuff and have it left longer to give extra sleeve length. A tailor can technically do this but depending on how much length is added by a longer cuff, it runs the risk of looking wonky because the cuff is abnormally long. you don’t cut your shirt- you wear a looser, button down shirt or you wear a full zip up shirt or hoodie. As long as the shirt opens all the way, you’ll be fine. You’d be putting your operated arm in first and when removing it, you’d take the operated arm out last. Remember “first in;last our” and you’ll do okay. You can wear a looser pull over, but it’s more difficult. It would require you to put your operated arm in first, THEN your head in thr head hole and lastly your non-operated side; taking it off would be in reverse. A button down shirt is much easier.
