So, while the series didn’t have to have women in catsuits, it is hard to represent a universe of differing opinions and cultural backgrounds without them.
You simply cannot be for the sexual freedom of people in all their choices, and at the same time trample on the idea that people are sexualized. These are mutually exclusive propositions. By the time of TNG audiences has become more sophisticated. They expected character development and science that made sense. They expected continuity and secondary stories that pervaded through a season. TNG gave us all of this along with up to date special effects and quality acting. It also had competition. Competent competition, against which it needed to fight its corner.
TOS was made at a time when the reset button was pressed at the end of each episode. Each week was a new story and it didn’t matter if you hadn’t seen last weeks.
