Another element the pair incorporated during the press tour was classic black dresses—a staple of Madonna’s that Wood interpreted via a black Saint Laurent gown at the Toronto premiere in September—and corsetry. In the process of portraying Madonna both on-screen and on the step and repeat, Wood says she’s learned a great deal about the queen of pop. “What I love about her early looks is she was just doing her thing, such as having competitions with people about who could wear the most bracelets and jewelry,” Wood says. “These were all things that happened organically, and they became staples of her look and of that time.” She’s still most impressed by how Madonna has managed to maintain her sense of individuality throughout the years—fashion included. “She is someone who has always managed to incorporate her sexuality into her fashion while remaining completely in control and empowered,” Wood says. “It somehow never feels overt or attention seeking because she wears it so authentically.”
To bring Madonna to life via style, the pair zeroed in on a few key Madonna looks from early on in her career. For the Brooklyn premiere this month, for instance, Wood wore a pinstriped Moschino dress with a cross necklace—an homage to the pinstriped tailoring Madonna wore during her ’90s Blond Ambition tour. “The Blond Ambition tour was a favorite of mine,” Wood says. “Her performance of ‘Express Yourself’ on that tour is still one of the greatest things I have ever seen. So any nod to that was thrilling.” For McMillen, the challenge as a stylist was pointing to Madonna without it looking cheesy. “Evan and I didn’t want anything to look like a costume or too literal,” she says, adding that it was a natural tie-in to Wood’s personal style. “Evan’s personal style naturally aligns with [Madonna’s] preference for sharp tailoring.”
